  Mission Statement
The mission of the Virginia Beach City Public Schools High/Middle/Elementary School Guidance Program is to partner with parents, community, faculty and staff to provide a comprehensive, developmental counseling program addressing the academic, career, and personal/social development of all students thus preparing them with the knowledge and skills to be productive members of society.

What are the credentials of Counselors?

  • Master’s degree from an approved college/university in school counseling.
  • Two years of successful full-time teaching or relevant work experience in counseling.
  • Licensed by the Virginia Department of Education.

What does the counseling program provide for students?

  • Assists students in their educational, career, personal and social development.
  • Helps students resolve problems which interfere with learning.
  • Facilitates educational and career planning.
  • Increases knowledge of self and others.

How is a student referred to the Counselor?

Students may be referred to the counselor by parent/guardian, teachers, administrators, or they may self-refer.

Are students required to participate in the Program?

No student is required to participate in any guidance and counseling program to which the parents of the student object.  Parents may choose to limit participation in any or all guidance and counseling services at any time by sending a letter to the guidance office.

Registering a new student?

New students can be registered between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.  Parents or legal guardians must bring proof of residency for the Corporate Landing Middle School zone.   Other documents required for registration are:

Also, if your student has a 504 plan or gifted, please bring in that information as well.  Other items that may be required are Custody Papers, Shared Items and/or Out of Zone documentation.   Please call the guidance department for additional information.

Transferring Students

Please call the guidance office at (757) 648-4511 as soon as you know that your child will be transferring to another school. By calling the guidance office, we can help make the student’s transition a smooth one.   This allows us to get all paperwork, health information, and textbooks in order.

What can you as a parent do to help your child succeed in school?

  • Provide a good study environment at home.
  • Establish fair and reasonable expectations.
  • Take time to listen to your child.
  • Participate in school activities.
  • Maintain communication with teachers, counselors, and other school personnel.
  • Help your child establish realistic career and educational goals.
  • Celebrate your child’s successes and recognize that mistakes or failures can be turned into positive learning experiences.
